Harriet Selfe

Harriet is a realist painter with a focus on the human figure, nature, everyday items, and classical portraiture. She uses vibrant colour to express her personal view of the world.

Her work is influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, particularly Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, known for their rich colour, intricate detail, and dramatic, romantic compositions. She is also inspired by contemporary artists such as Alex Gross and HappyMaddyArt.

Alongside these classical influences, Harriet explores pop culture and narrative themes, painting scenes from films, book illustrations, and nostalgic toys. This blend of traditional technique and contemporary subject matter informs both her artistic practice and her teaching.

Harriet teaches Visual Art and Painting at Napier Girls’ High School and lives in Hawke’s Bay.
