Jody Hope Gibbons is a contemporary New Zealand painter whose work is held in private collections both locally and internationally.
Born and raised in Northland, she originally worked under the name Jody Gibbons, later adopting her family name, Hope Gibbons, as her artist signature in honour of her late father. The change also distinguished this evolving body of work from the children’s art she became known for earlier in her career under the name “jodyg”.
Her current practice explores the materiality of paint, pushing beyond traditional painting techniques through the use of rust, inks, leaf and varnish. The work is layered, tactile and constantly evolving, becoming increasingly bold, colourful and gestural over time.
While abstract in nature, her paintings repeatedly return to the land, with subtle references to landscape and environment emerging throughout the work.
