Originally from Sydney, Alecia has lived in Wellington for 23 years, where she and her family share a deep love for the outdoors. She feels incredibly fortunate to have been painting full-time for the past two and a half years, pursuing a passion that has been with her since childhood.
At the age of nine, Alecia attended a Saturday morning painting class where students worked on paper made from tobacco. They painted a background before layering an image on top, always working within a limited timeframe. As children, they didn’t overthink the process—they simply painted, and they always finished. The unique texture of the paper gave the final pieces a naturally aged, charming quality. They would roll them up and take them home, carrying with them the joy of creativity.
This notion of not being precious and not over thinking her work still resonates heavily with her practice today.
