Mam Aotearoa is a local HB artist whose drawings, created with ink, acrylic and coloured pencil emerge from the page with a slow meditative patience. The process is always an exciting act of discovery.
Mam’s drawing practice is rooted in simplicity: a desk under a window, quality paper, and an array of tools like pens, pencils, paint, and ink. She’s captivated by the process of creation, where marks on paper evolve into unexpected forms. With pen in hand, she approaches the blank page with a loose, intuitive mindset. Drawing is a treasure hunt for her, where shapes and forms emerge, guiding the next steps. Her work blends abstraction and representation; she prefers to discover and see rather than plan and think. While a drawing may suggest its next stage, it rarely follows a logical path. Mistakes happen, and integrating them becomes part of the process. This fluid, unpredictable journey is what makes drawing so thrilling for her.
