Sonia Chrystall

Working intuitively, Sonia allows each painting to develop its own balance, rhythm and meaning. Colour sits at the heart of her practice, with a desire to create work that brings a sense of joy, energy and emotional connection.

Based in Te Āwanga, Hawke’s Bay, Sonia draws ongoing inspiration from the natural world. Her recent work has increasingly explored the New Zealand landscape, while maintaining the layered colour and expressive compositions that define her style.

Her paintings move fluidly between abstraction and realism, reflecting both inner and outer worlds and the interconnectedness between them. Shapes and forms emerge symbolically, creating works that feel instinctive, layered and deeply atmospheric.

Sonia sells her work privately and through galleries across New Zealand. She is also the coordinator of the Hawke’s Bay Art Trail.
